Campaign Update - March 24, 2010

DONNA SPEAKS OUT ABOUT THE SBOE

This campaign season, races for the State Board of Education (SBOE) are receiving more attention than usual. We have already witnessed the defeat of two incumbents in the Republican primary, and three more seats are competitive in November. District 10, which incorporates part of Travis County is an open seat as well as District 3 in Bexar County. District 5 which includes the rest of the Travis County is held by incumbent Ken Mercer.

We have three excellent candidates running in these races, and after the recent shenanigans surrounding textbook selection, it is time to elect some SBOE members who will work to provide meaningful oversight of our public education system rather than merely serving as a distraction.

As you know, Donna authored a constitutional amendment last session that would have transferred the management of the Permanent School Fund from the SBOE to an appointed body comprised of individuals with financial expertise and investment experience. Watch here to learn more about why this is such an important issue.

YOU’RE INVITED

Donna’s opponent, a former NFL player and member of the GOPAC-TX board, has the potential to raise a good chunk of money and spend some of his own during this election. We need your help to ensure Donna has ample resources to spread  her message across District 48. Please join us for a brunch and fundraiser on May 1st from 10 am – 12 pm at the home of Dr. John Hogg and David Garza, 1404 Wildcat Hollow; Austin, TX 78746.

LAST CHANCE TO VOTE FOR DONNA!

The initial round of the “Monopoly Buster Ballot” sponsored by Senator Kirk Watson ends in just two days (March 26th at 5 p.m.). Twenty-eight House incumbents facing opponents in November are participating, and the five candidates who receive the most votes will advance to a final round. The top vote-getter in that round will receive a $10,000 contribution, and the runner-up will receive $1,500. Click here to cast your vote for Donna, and spread the word to your friends.
